Defender Interior Insulating Windows are very simple to install if you proceed step by step. They are simpler and more efficient than most storm window installations and a fraction of the cost of new replacements.

Overview of Process

To provide you with an overview of the process, the frame strips come in 2 parts that snap together and lock the acrylic plexiglass in place. First attach strip with adhesive to surface, then staple or tack for additional adhesion and to tighten the seal. Put acrylic plexiglass in place, then snap part two of frame in place locking plexiglass in place. Attach top first, then the sides.

Window Parts:

  • Frame- comes in strips to cut to size
  • Acrylic Plexiglass – comes precut

Tools Needed:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Stapler or nailer
  • Hack Saw or Snips to cut frame to size.
  • 1” Brad Nails
  • Tack or small hammer (In Place of Stapler)

Detailed Step by Step instruction

Step 1 – Measure interior of window jamb. Ensure that you have approximately ¾ inch of surface area to attach frame on top, two sides and window sill for Defender 1. If you lack the surface area then you will need Defender 2 for Surface mount.

Step 2 – Measure and cut frame strips to size. Frame on top can be cut on 45 degree angle or sides can be cut to be perpendicular with top strip.

Step 3 - Draw light pencil line as guide for mounting frame strip with adhesive on 3 sides. Top and 2 sides. *Bottom piece on window sill will rest on sill. Bottom piece will not attach with adhesive, staple or tacks if planning on opening window.

Step 4 – Line up left strip with pencil line, slowly start removing adhesive backing and press into place. Then repeat for right side and top. Now frame top and sides are in place attached with adhesive backing.

Step 5 – Using staple gun or Tack Hammer secure strips in place every 3-4 inches with staple or nail.

Step 6 – Plexiglass comes with blue protective film. First remove window facing blue film. Attach Sill frame piece (bottom piece) to acrylic plexiglass. Then place plexiglass in frame starting with resting on sill, then push plexiglass in place. Then start removing blue film facing you from top to bottom and sides. This avoids getting dirt or finderprints on plexiglass.

Step 7 – Starting at top left corner start snapping top part of frame in place. Once the top is in place, then follow same installation for sides. Lastly, peel remaining blue film off plexiglass.

You’re finished. You will be amazed how unnoticeable your new Defender Window looks. It will blend right in. You will notice how air tight the window is immediately.

*TIP – Start with your smallest window first to master the installation process. After the first Defender energy saving window is installed you will be a master. Your install time will get quicker with each one.
